Violet Melvin

Violet Melvin, 86, of Du Quoin, passed away at 11:50 P.M., Monday, June 2, 2003 at her residence.
Violet was a homemaker.  She was a member of First Christian Church in Du Quoin.
She was born May 8, 1917 at Marissa, IL, the daughter of Alex and Elizabeth (Mart) Shelby.
She married Joe Melvin on December 29, 1934 at Pinckneyville, IL and he preceded her in death on January 6, 1976.
She is survived by her children - John Melvin, Nancy McNeely, Joeanna Robey, Dennis Melvin, Joseph Melvin, Vernon Melvin, all of Du Quoin, David Melvin of Phoenix, AZ, Christopher Melvin and Mark Melvin, both of Nebraska, three sisters - Catherine Ray of Du Quoin, Thelma Baycott of St. Louis, MO, and Juanita Walters of Effingham, IL, one brother - Charles Shelby of Clayborne, TX, fifty-one grandchildren, sixty-eight great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons - Norman and William, and one daughter - Ellen.
Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Friday, June 6, 2003 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Du Quoin with Rev. Gerald Wright officiating.
Friends called from 5 to 7 P.M., Thursday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin.
Interment was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Du Quoin.
Those attending the services were asked to go directly to the cemetery.
